JUBILEE 2000 SUPPORTS NIGERIAN PLAN

JUBILEE 2000, the British-based group campaigning for the cancellation of the unpayable debts of the world’s poorest countries by next year, supports Nigeria’s calls for debt relief, director Ann Pettifor said on Tuesday. Speaking after a two-hour meeting with president-elect Olusegun Obasanjo, the director of the high-profile group said: “We in Jubilee 2000 would be prepared to support Nigeria’s claims for substantial debt relief.” Pettifor welcomed a commitment from Obasanjo that negotiations on Nigeria’s more than $30-billion in international debt be transparent and open. “We want debt relief to work twice: first as money to the poor. Second, as empowerment of the poor,” she said.
