THE United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda on Friday sentenced Clement Kayishema to life in prison and Obed Ruzindana to 25 years’ jail for genocide during Rwanda’s 1994 civil war. The tribunal, which sits in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha, found the two men had jointly directed Hutu militiamen to kill Tutsi men, women and children, many of them in churches and a stadium where they had taken refuge. The tribunal also found that Kayishema (45) a medical doctor who was prefect of the western Kibuye region, and Ruzindana (40) who was a businessman, took part in the attacks themselves. They had pleaded not guilty.
