PRESIDENT Charles Taylor has said that Liberian authorities will destroy all arms and ammunition surrendered by ex-combatants and now held by the United Nations and African peacekeepers. He made the announcement in a radio broadcast late on Wednesday, saying that the decision was taken following consultations with the National Legislature, but gave no details of those talks. Taylor last month vowed “no one would take them except by force.” Tens of thousands of assault rifles, artillery and millions of ammunition were collected from some 21000 fighters from half a dozen former rebel groups and the national armed forces of Liberia during the disarmament exercise which lasted for several weeks in early 1997.
