JAMES SMALL, one-time top Springbok try scorer and record holder for Test caps, was left out of the Lion’s Currie cup squad of 22 players released on Monday, and his immediate future with the Ellis Park-based union hangs in the balance. Uncertainty surrounds the controversial Small’s intentions since his return from playing for a World XV in Britain. His ommission from the squad for the Vodacom Cup final, which the Lions won 73-7 against Griquas last Saturday may have contributed to Small’s decision to miss the weekend’s celebratory functions for the Lions. Coach Laurie Mains told The Star: “I’m finding it difficult to get James Small to be part of the team and he is thus not in this particular squad.” A meeting to clear the air is expected later this week.
