HEYNS IN PAN PACIFICS TEAM

DUAL Olympic breaststroke champion Penny Heyns was named on Wednesday as part of a 26-member South African team to contest next month’s Pan Pacific swimming championships in Sydney. Heyns, who won the 100-200m breaststroke double at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, said she wanted to use the meeting as part of her preparation for next year’s Sydney Games. The 1999 Pan Pacs will be held from August 22-29 at the same pool to be used for the Olympics. The South African team also includes promising distance swimmer Ryk Neethling and rising sprinter Brendon Dedekind. Neethling took a silver medal in the men’s 1500m freestyle at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Malaysia and is currently ranked third in the world. Dedekind is ranked second in the world in the 50m dash after clocking 22.22 seconds at the South African national championships.
