THREE members of the state assembly in Abia State, eastern Nigeria, were shot and wounded hours after impeaching the assembly speaker, the Daily Champion newspaper reported on Friday. The three, including the assembly’s deputy speaker Ngozi Ulunwa, were stopped on a road just outside the state capital, Umuahia, on Tuesday night by gunmen who opened fire on their vehicle, the paper said. The attack came 12 hours after the vote to impeach assembly speaker Nkem Ike for incompetence and mismanagement of resources. The three men were taken to hospital where they are recovering. A vote on a new speaker is to be held on Monday.
