The Communication Workers’ Union, which represents nearly 26000 Telkom workers, on Tuesday announced its intention to go on strike on Monday. Telkom spokeswoman Amanda Singleton said contingency plans have been made to minimise the impact of the strike on customers. The CWU’s announcement follows a deadlock in wage negotiations at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration last month, with Telkom offering a 5% general salary increase, excluding performance-based increases (2%) and gainsharing bonuses (1,1%). The union demanded a minimum wage of R2600 per month.
