GENDER-NEUTRAL RAPE LAW PROPOSED

THE South African Law Commission has proposed the repeal of the common law offence of rape and its replacement with a new, gender-neutral statutory offence. This means both men and women can be rape victims and perpetrators, according to the commission’s discussion paper and draft bill on sexual offences which was handed to Justice Minister Penuell Maduna in Cape Town on Wednesday.
