MIDI UNDER FIRE AT IBA

ELEVEN objections, including one from a shareholder, were lodged on Tuesday with the Independent Broadcasting Authority against Midi Television’s application to change its licence conditions. The objectors have accused Midi of unfair practices and called for e.tv’s licence to be revoked altogether, the Business Day reports. The newspaper reports the broadcasting industry has accused Midi of monopolistic practices which will result in job losses and revenue losses of up to R30-million a year to the independent production industry. Midi wants a less transparent shareholding structure. It also wants to cut back on its local content output, a significant condition attached to its licence. The Independent Producers’ Organisation of South Africa, media services group Sasani, the SABC and Deadtime, which produces five hours of programming for e.tv daily are amongst the objectors, the paper reports.
