HAYWARD THE HERO FOR EP

WITH the result never in doubt, it was left to speedster Mornantau Hayward to supply the interest as Eastern Province crushed lowly Easterns by nine wickets in their Supersport Series match at St George’s Park on Sunday. Hayward took a career best six for 31 as Easterns were bowled out for 185 in their second innings, allowing EP to romp to a winning total of 95 for the loss of one wicket before lunch. The carrot-topped paceman’s haul gave him match figures of 12 for 94 — also a career best — as his number of scalps, after just three games of the new season, grew to 25. Even against a brittle battling line-up such as Easterns, it was superb bowling, although Hayward may be the first to admit that it will be wickets against bigger teams that could confirm his current form. On Sunday, he used his biggest asset – raw speed – to knock off the tail, as Easterns started the day with their backs to the wall at 175 for seven — an overall lead of 84. After just 20 minutes Easterns were already back in the changerooms as Hayward skittled out the last three wickets, leaving his side a comfortable winnings target. And despite the early loss of Carl Bradfield (0), Mark Benfield (50 not out) and James Bryant (51 not out), easily secured the win before the morning session was even over. — MWP
