LAWYERS for Midi television, who own television channel e.tv, on Monday asked the Cape Town High Court to “seriously question” the motivation behind the liquidation proceedings against it. Midi TV is defending an application by production company Sprockets to have it provisionally liquidated for allegedly failing to pay R5,5 million it says it is owed for producing the late night “Deadtime” slot. Lawyer Leonard Harris told the court that Midi TV is not experiencing financial difficulties, but are refusing to pay the debt as they do not owe the production company any money. Harris said that liquidation proceedings are inappropriate where a debt is in dispute. He added that e.tv’s balance sheet at the end of March shows a positive balance of R57 million, and that it has assets worth R270 million and R15 million in cash. He also questioned why only one production company is seeking a liquidation order.
