SECURITY INDUSTRY GETS SHORTER HOURS

PARLIAMENT’S labour committee has agreed that transitional provisions in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act should be amended to allow a more gradual cutting of working hours from the current 60 a week to the 45 in the security industry as stipulated by the Act. SABC radio news reported the security industry is to be given an extra year phase-in period in which to reduce the working hours of its 175000 members. Once approved by Parliament, the amendment will see security guards’ working hours reduced to fifty-five this year.
