NIGERIAN POLICE ARRIVE IN DRC

MORE than 50 Nigerian police officers have arrived in Kinshasa to provide security for rebel leaders who may join Democratic Republic of Congo peace talks. Interior Minister Gaetan Kakudji said 52 policemen arrived on Wednesday as “Nigeria’s contribution” to protect rebel leaders who have been invited to a national consultative meeting organised by churches. Kakudji said President Laurent Kabila’s government is committed to giving “maximum protection” to any rebel leaders who should come to the talks. None of the three rebel movements at war with Kinshasa have sent delegates to the capital, where Kabila on February 21 offered a “general amnesty” to the rebels and other opposition figures.
