MAINS WANTS FOUR AUSSIE TEAMS

FORMER New Zealand coach Laurie Mains has added his weight to calls for a fourth Australian team to be included in the Super 12 series. Mains, in Sydney as coach of the Cats ahead of Saturday’s match with New South Wales, told reporters on Thursday he thinks Australia deserve to have an extra team after winning last year’s World Cup. Australia currently have just three teams in the competition while New Zealand have five and South Africa four. “I think Australia is justified in calling for a fourth team and personally I’d welcome it,” Mains said. “There’s a lot of depth here and every time Australian rugby seems to lose a few players some players we’ve never heard of before come up and play really well.” Australian rugby boss John O’Neill has said he plans to push claims for a fourth Australian team at this month’s International Rugby Board meeting in Dublin despite likely opposition from New Zealand and South Africa.
