DURBAN TO HOST TRADE UNION SUMMIT

SOUTH Africa will host a global trade union summit next week, which is expected to chart a course for the labour movement. Durban is hosting the 17th World Congress of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), the world’s largest trade union body. The theme of the April 3-7 congress – which will be opened by President Thabo Mbeki — is “Globalising social justice: trade unionism in the 21st century”. International Labour Organisation (ILO) Director-General Juan Somavia and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan are scheduled to address the congress.
