LEHLO Ledwaba once again proved himself a cut above the average boxer on Friday night, when he dismantled and convincingly defeated Ernesto Grey in nine rounds. The victory means that Ledwaba has successfully defended his IBF junior featherweight world title for the second time. Both fighters started the bout tentatively, carefully feeling each other out. An accidental clash of heads caused a cut high up on the number-one contender’s head. Ledwaba picked up the pace in the fourth round scoring frequently with his left jab and two left hooks dropped the gallant challenger in the fifth round. Although he beat the count, it was courage alone which kept him up as Ledwaba mercilessly let fly with lefts and rights to Grey’s head, opening a cut on his left eye. Both fighters cooled off in the sixth and at the start of the ninth, Ledwaba again dropped the Colombian, this time with a short left. Grey again rose to beat the count, but was met with a flurry of well controlled punches from the champion. Although Grey was clearly out on his feet the referee waited for Ledwaba to blast his opponent through the ropes and half out of the ring before stopping the contest held in Bristol.
