‘WE DIDN’T HEAR HANSIE TAPES’

TWO South Africans who thought they heard tape recordings purported to be between national cricket captain Hansie Cronje and a bookmaker have admitted they listened to reconstructions. The Sunday Times led its front page with the news that South Africa’s high commissioner to India, Maite Nkoane-Mashabane, listened to the police recordings and “was convinced the accents were not South African.” However, an official in Nkoane-Mashabane’s office, who declined to be identified, said on Monday the commissioner has yet to hear the original tapes. “We do not offer any comment at this stage, but the commissioner has not listened to the tapes,” the official said. “What she heard was something on the television.” Veteran cricket writer Trevor Chesterfield, of the Pretoria News and website CricInfo, also thought he heard the tapes while waiting to be interviewed on Indian radio. He was quoted in the press as saying both the voices on the tape seemed Asian. “At no stage did I ask questions about the tape, because I was not aware it was a re-enactment of the original,” Chesterfield said. “Had I been told it was a re-enactment I would have understood.”
