HARRY Moses, given the task of cleaning up South Africa’s boxing administration two months ago, delivered his findings on the state of boxing control to Sport Minister Ngconde Balfour at a boxing indaba held in Pretoria on Friday afternoon. Moses’ recommendations of reform were accepted and the Boxing Control Act is to be redrafted, using the Boxing Transformation Team’s (BTT) recommendations as its foundation. The National Boxing Commission is to be downsized to a chairman and four commissioners, while the provincial commissions will be scrapped in entirety. There will however be one representative appointed in each region to report to the commission on activities in their respective areas. The National Boxing commission will now work closely with the department of sport and it’s head office will be moved from Johannesburg to Pretoria. Commissioners will no longer be elected, but will be appointed by the Minister of sport, with all five vacant posts being advertised in the media and are free to public application. The current members of the Commission will end their terms at the end of June and will then be replaced by the newly appointed team. “We’re all very happy with the prospective changes,” said Bert Blewett who chaired the Indaba and was also part of the BTT. “The success of the new commission will of course depend on those the minister chooses to appoint to it.”
