WESTERN donors and Tanzanian officials began informal talks on Monday on how to stimulate growth and use windfalls from recent debt relief to reduce poverty in one of the world’s poorest nations. Representatives of donors, due to attend a World Bank Consultative Group meeting in Dar es Salaam starting on Wednesday, applauded the country’s success in implementing Western-backed economic reforms, saying they have achieved a stable macroeconomic environment. But the benefits are yet to trickle down to the population of 30-million, 50% of whom live on less than $1 a day.
