MINISTERS of twenty of the world’s poorest countries will meet in Geneva on June 7 to discuss how to implement debt reduction initiatives by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The Swiss state secretariat for the economy, SeCo, said on Wednesday ministers of the countries would talk with representatives of the IMF and World Bank. The countries involved are Honduras, Sao Tome and Principe, Ethiopia, Angola, Benin, Gambia, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mauritania, Central African Republic, Mozambique, Cameroon, Nicaragua, Congo Brazzaville, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Bolivia and Uganda. The Group of Seven rich nations — Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States — made a pledge in Cologne in 1999 to write-off $100 billion of debts of the world’s 40-odd poorest countries. But progress has been slow so far, critics say.
