ZIM BEAT IRELAND BY 49 RUNS

ZIMBABWE enjoyed a comfortable 49-run win over an Ireland side bolstered by the presence of Australian Mark Waugh on Wednesday. Grant Flower led the way for Zimbabwe, making an undefeated 64 from 73 balls as the touring side totalled 227 for four from their 50 overs. Flower then helped to ensure there was no shock victory for Ireland’s amateur cricketers when he took the prize wicket of Waugh who was bowled after making 38 off 55 balls. Waugh, who was making a guest appearance as part of a four-week coaching stint in Ireland, did at least have the satisfaction of making top score for his adopted country. However, the innings petered out after Waugh was fourth man out with the score on 131. Ireland performed creditably with the ball to restrict the touring team to less than five runs per over. Off spinner Matt Dwyer, who took one for 28 off his 10 overs, was the pick of the Irish bowlers. However, 52 from Alistair Campbell helped to put the score beyond Ireland’s compass. The two teams meet again on Thursday in Dublin.
