SOUTH African police have launched an operation in Mozambique to find and destroy weapons left over from its civil war, which have often fallen into the hands of rebels and criminals in the region. The operation, which began on Monday, involves 17 members of the South African Police Service. It’s the sixth of its kind since 1996. In the five previous operations, the SAPS and the Mozambican authorities had discovered and destroyed almost 14000 assault rifles, 6390 anti-personnel mines, 8510 mortars, and over 3.4 million rounds of ammunition. The Mozambican countryside is littered with arms caches, a grim legacy of its brutal 16-year civil war, which ended in 1992.
