MOZ PROBES AIDS REPATRIATION CLAIMS

THE Mozambican government has launched an investigation into allegations that South African authorities have been repatriating Mozambican miners infected with HIV/Aids. Deputy national health director Avertino Barreto said there are no confirmed cases of deportations of HIV-infected Mozambican miners. Mozambican migrant representatives reported recently that Mozambican workers, mostly miners, are being repatriated if they are found to be HIV positive. They claim that more than 50 miners have been sent back home since the beginning of the year over their HIV status. Almost 100000 Mozambicans work in the South African mines.
