ANGOLAN ARMY FINDS REBEL ARMS DUMP

ANGOLAN troops have found an arms dump containing some 7_900 60 mm shells and 370 crates of other ammunition in the area around Kuito, one of the most war-ravaged towns in the country, Monday’s press said. The ammunition was left behind by rebels of the UNITA when they fled before a government offensive which began in late 1998, the military told the Jornal de Angola. Soldiers also found about 1_000 rocket-propelled grenades at Kalussinga, the chief town of the central Bie Province. Kuito has been pounded almost to rubble in the civil war that has gripped Angola almost non-stop since independence in 1975. – AFP
