THE expansion by SA companies into the rest of the African continent is making headlines around the world, with the latest edition of the international news weekly, Time magazine, devoting an entire page to what it calls “the SA invasion”. Citing examples such as supermarket group Shoprite Checkers, the Time article describes how SA companies are bringing choice, better service and quality, and lower prices to the rest of the continent exciting consumers and frightening local manufacturers and politicians. Shoprite Checkers – which has stores in nine other African countries – will open new stores in Malawi, Tanzania, and Angola this year.
