11_000 FRENCH END IT EVERY YEAR

More than 11_000 people commit suicide in France every year, most of them men and aged between 25 and 34, while 160_000 make suicide attempts, according to an official study. The government report said suicide causes 2.1% of deaths. But among the 25-34 year olds it is the primary cause of death. It is the second cause of death among 15-24 year olds after road accidents, according to 1997 statistics. Suicide represents 15% of deaths among 15-24 year olds. Nearly three times as many men try to take their lives and succeed in taking their lives as women, with an average of 8_000 male suicides compared to some 3_000 female suicides. The report says that compared to the end of the 19th century, there appeared to have been a growth in suicide among post-war generations.
