DISGRACED former chief executive officer of the Premier Soccer League, Joe Ndhlela, is to remain in custody after losing his second bail application in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Friday. Ndhlela’s R20 000 bail was earlier forfeited to the State after he failed to appear in court. His lawyers are considering lodging an appeal in the Johannesburg High Court against Regional Court Magistrate Desmond Nair’s ruling on Friday. Nair said there was a likelihood Ndhlela would avoid trial if granted further bail. The court also found Ndhlela appeared to have “a propensity to evade justice” and there was a likelihood he could again fail to turn up at court if things went against him. He will appear in court again on May 11, when a trial date will be set for his trial on three counts of fraud and one of corruption totalling about R1m, for which he is in custody. The charges relate to when Ndhlela was a senior official at Transnet.
