PRESS WATCHDOG BARES IT?S TEETH

ACTIVISTS from the press watchdog Reporters Without Borders on Thursday occupied the Tunisian national tourist office in Paris to protest the arrest of journalist and rights activist Sihem Bensedrine. Robert Menard, the non-governmental group’s president, said he intended to remain in the office until she was released and promised that he would be joined by Tunisian journalist Taoufik Ben Brick later in the day. Bensedrine, the 47-year old representative of the Tunisian National Council for Civil Liberties and director of the on-line magazine Kalima, was arrested at Tunis airport on Tuesday. She has been charged by examining magistrates with ”defaming the judiciary” and ”publishing false news in order to trouble public order”. She will appear in court on July 5. – AFP
