South African Environmental Affairs Minister Valli Moosa will on Friday sign a memorandum of understanding in Windhoek with his Namibian counterpart Philemon Malima to set up a cross-border conservation area. The department said in a statement the environmental collaboration programme would establish the Richtersveld/Ai-Ais Transfrontier Park, a protected conservation area. The area was part of a regional collaboration aimed at eradicating political fences in the interest of responsible environmental management and conservation. The proposed conservation area covered about 5806 square kilometres, 32% of which lay in South Africa, it said.
