VOTER registration in preparation for general elections in Lesotho next year which was scheduled to be completed on Sunday, has been extended by three weeks. Lesotho’s Independent Electoral Commission chairman Leshele Thoahlane announced that the extension had been necessitated by technical and logistical problems encountered during the registration period. These prevented a large number of eligible voters from registering. The problems included delays in the delivery of registration materials to registration centres, confusion over the location of some centres, depletion of registration materials and behaviour by some registration staff considered to be in contravention of public service regulations. Thoahlane said the IEC had taken necessary steps to return the registration process to normal, which included suspending some registration clerks. – Sapa
