Chiefs eye prize scalp

Kaizer Chiefs have become the first South African team to reach the African Cup Winners’ Cup semifinals after they drew 1-1 with Ismaily in Egypt in their quarter-final second leg after a goalless draw at Ellis Park.

The team that stands between Chiefs and the final is Club Africain of Tunisia, who they face inRustenburg on Saturday.

Three South African teams have participated in this tournament with no success: in 1997 Jomo Cosmos reached the quarterfinals, in 1998 Sundowns were booted out in the second round and last year Supersport were knocked out also in the second round.

Chiefs’ road to the semifinal was not easy as they had to scrape through against US Stade Tamponnaise of Runion, followed by Sunshine of Seychelles. Arthur Zwane’s goal in Cairo put them through to the semifinals on the away-goal rule.
