PE PRISON UNREST

EIGHT prisoners were being treated at the Livingstone public hospital in Port Elizabeth after being injured in a gang fight at the prison on Monday. The eight were among 30 others who were injured in the fight which broke out in the St Albans prison complex around 11pm on Monday. Correctional services department representative Tembisa Sipambo on Wednesday said 17 out of the 30 prisoners were taken to the prison hospital while 13 others received treatment at the Livingstone public hospital. Five of the 13 were discharged and were back in their prison cells, and eight were being treated at the public hospital. This was a second fight to break out of the St Albans prison complex on the same Monday. The first erupted in the medium security section where six juvenile prisoners were injured. One died in hospital at 10.49am on Tuesday, said Sipambo. The five others were taken back to the juvenile prison. – Sapa
