Baby found dead after car hijacking

Pretoria police are investigating the death of a 10-month-old baby boy following a hijacking near Rosslyn, Pretoria on Saturday morning.

Police representative Captain Piletji Sebola said 29-year-old Sello Obed Mamogobo, an employee of SA Breweries, was transporting beer from Rosslyn to friends in the Mpumolong section of Atteridgeville with his son Kemoneilwe when they were hijacked by three armed men at 9.40am.

”During the hijacking the baby was also taken with the car,” said Sebola. Mamogobo informed his car-tracking company and the vehicle was recovered half-an-hour later in Saulsville. Sebola said the baby, all the crates of beer, and the car radio were missing.

A man searching for scrap metal at a dump site near Lotus Gardens on Sunday morning came across a bag. When he opened it, he found the dead baby inside.

Momogoba and the child’s mother, Leago Mmvqibisa (24) later identified the body at the mortuary.

Police said it was not yet clear how the baby had died and that a post-mortem would be conducted.

A kidnapping, hijack and inquest docket has been opened. No-one has been arrested for the crime. – Sapa
