Esperanza expected in the Durban docks

The Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, was expected to arrive at Durban harbour at 3pm on Sunday, Greenpeace representative Sara Holden said.

The 72-metre long vessel is the largest of the fleet of three ships which the organisation maintains, and has a crew of twenty. She will stay in the harbour for the duration of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Holden would not reveal what plans Greenpeace had to participate in the summit but said the organisation’s policy was one of non-violent direct action.

Last Saturday, six of a group of 12 activists scaled the five-storey seawater cooling pumphouse at the Koeberg nuclear power station to unfurl a banner proclaiming ”Nukes out of Africa.”

All 12 were arrested and pleaded guilty in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court where they would be sentenced on Monday.
