German cyclist found murdered in Malawi

A GERMAN woman cycling around the world has been found murdered at Mangochi settlement in a popular national park in southern Malawi, police said on Sunday.

A police officer said the tourist, identified only as Atalie, was found by forest guards ”robbed and murdered” on Friday night in Cape Maclear National Park.

The park is situated at the southern tip of Lake Malawi.

”All her possessions, including her bike and money, were stolen,” the officer said.

The woman entered Malawi from Tanzania last month as part of her round-the-world cycling trip.

”The government has been shocked by her murder,” Tourism Minister Ken Lipenga said.

The murder comes days after tourism authorities warned that some Malawian guides are deliberately misdirecting tourists to remote spots, where they are mugged.

Lipenga said the government will increase police patrols at prime tourist spots ”in order not to let a few people tarnish the country’s good image.” – AFP
