Greenpeace activists in court this Friday

The case against 12 Greenpeace environmental activists has been postponed until Friday for further investigation, a court official said on Monday.

The twelve appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were warned to appear again on Friday.

The activists were arrested on Saturday after they breached security at the Koeberg nuclear power station during a anti-nuclear protest. They have not yet been charged.

Greenpeace representative Mike Townsley said the twelve were facing charges of trespassing, breaching a maritime one-mile exclusion zone and breaching security at a national key point.

The 12 had also been threatened with deportation, although the court case appeared to have stayed any move to remove them from the country, he said.

Greenpeace is campaigning for an end to nuclear power in favour of renewable, sustainable power sources such as wind and solar energy.

The activists arrested are from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Argentina, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, Mexico, Lebanon and Australia. – Sapa
