Police discover two arms caches

Two arms caches that may be connected with the alleged rightwing plot to topple the government were discovered on Tuesday and Wednesday, police said.

Police Director Sally de Beer, representative for national police commissioner Jackie Selebi, said a cache containing pipe bombs and other materials that could be used in military-type actions was found on a farm near Keimoes in the Northern Cape.

Selebi went to Keimoes to assess the situation.

The 26 pipe bombs were similar to those found some weeks before near Nylstroom (Modimolle) in Limpopo, but further details could not be released as the investigation was still under way.

Arrests were expected soon.

In a second incident Eastern Cape police, acting on a tip-off, raided a farm near Umtata and arrested a man found in possession of various firearms, some unlicensed, as well as 728 rounds of ammunition.

Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta could not confirm that the man was connected with the right-wing group, but said that some of the weapons found were AK47 and R4 combat rifles. The man, who claimed to be a police reservist, was arrested and will be appearing in court. – Sapa
