UGANDA has deployed troops in the northeastern DRC, where some 200 people are feared dead in ethnic clashes sparked by a land dispute. Major Shaban Bantariza said that the Ugandan battalion stationed in Bunia town were deployed to quell the unrest. ”If the commander in Bunia feels that the capacity he has is not enough to contain the situation, then we shall withdraw some of the troops that were recently sent … to beef him up,” Bantariza said. Reports said that that Lendu tribesmen attacked their Hema rivals at Kparanganza, 25 kilometres north of Bunia. Uganda recently said that the UN consented to its deployment in the DRC. Ugandan troops back one of two main rebel movements, the other backed by Rwanda, against the Kinshasa regime, which enjoyed the military support of Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia. – Sapa-AFP
