EIGHT COPS KILLED BY ROBBERS IN NIGERIA

EIGHT policemen were killed in Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, in three separate attacks by armed robbers staged within one hour, police representative Victor Chilaka said on Thursday. All eight policemen were attacked late on Wednesday, said Chilaka. ”We are very sad about this ugly incident. This is a major setback to the effort of the police to rid Lagos of crime,” he stated. Three policemen who responded to a distress call at the Daleko market area in Lagos’ Mushin district were shot and injured by robbers. All three later died in hospital, Chilaka said. Four other policemen were ambushed and shot dead at Okota in Isolo district on the northern outskirts of the city by another group of suspected armed robbers, Chilaka stated. Residents of Isolo district reported hearing sporadic shooting that lasted around 30 minutes late on Wednesday. – Sapa-AFP
