A POLICE detective was wounded by a sniper bullet on Friday while taking part in a crime crackdown operation, North Rand police said. Inspector M G Magopane, who was attacked in Daveyton, was taken to hospital where he was in a stable condition, said Superintendent Eugene Opperman. During Friday’s operation a team of 70 detectives, including Magopane, arrested 65 people, all of whom allegedly committed crime some six or seven years ago, Opperman said. The suspects, who have been on the police wanted list since 1995 and 1996, were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, armed robbery and rape to serious assault. ”The successes clearly show the SAPS’ commitment to …arrest those identified suspects who thought that they would evade arrest indefinitely,” Opperman said. The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in courts across the North Rand on Monday. ”The SAPS will, even if it takes them twenty or more years, eventually catch up with identified suspects,” Opperman said. – Sapa
