South Africa went into lunch on the opening day of their historic Test against Bangladesh at Buffalo Park at 106 for the loss of Hershelle Gibbs.
Bangladesh won the toss and invited South Africa to bat first on a greenish-looking pitch that did nothing unexpected throughout the morning session.
Graeme Smith and Gibbs started slowly and after half-an-hour the score was 20. Thereafter both batsmen accelerated the scoring rate and Gibbs hit a huge six over mid-wicket off Tapash Baishya.
It was Baishya who claimed Gibbs’ wicket when he returned for his second spell — the 21st over of the day — and was immediately successful.
Gibbs drove uppishly into the covers for Tushar Imran to take a head-high catch comfortably.
Gary Kirsten came in and looked determined as he seeks a century to become the first batsman world-wide to score a century against all nine other Test-playing countries.
At lunch Kirsten was on 17 with three boundaries. – Sapa
