Metro policeman beats-up hearse driver

A constable of the Tshwane metropolitan police has been suspended for allegedly assaulting the driver of a hearse, representative Mel Vosloo said on Wednesday.

He said Constable Willie Venter, in his twenties, also dealt a hearse passenger a blow. Venter was riding on his official motorcycle in Pretoria West on Tuesday when the hearse apparently turned in front of him.

”Venter ordered the motorist to stop, pulled him from the car and assaulted the driver with his fists. The passenger also received a smack,” Vosloo said.

Two other metro officers in the vicinity came to the assistance of the motorist and restrained Venter. The hearse was not part of a funeral procession at the time of incident.

Venter, who was off-duty, would face an internal hearing within the next two weeks. No criminal charges had been laid by Wednesday, Vosloo said.

Chief of Tshwane’s metro police, Commissioner Mpho Mmtule, bemoaned the incident and said management intended putting an end to such conduct.
