Wits University romped to an easy 3-0 win over 10-man Golden Arrows in a one sided Castle Premiership clash played at Milpark on Wednesday night.
Wits led 1-0 at halftime.
Arrows were reduced to 10 men two minutes into the second half when referee Morne Daniels sent off Lucky Sibeko for a foul on Ryan Hodgskin.
Wits were all over Arrows in a first half in which they dominated every aspect of the game. The home side were unlucky not to have been 3-0 ahead at the break.
Arrows keeper Davis Phiri made two outstanding saved from Gert Schalkwyk and Ivan Winstanley in the 22nd and 25th minutes respectively.
But the pressure told and it was Benson Mhlongo who got the breakthrough in the 30th minute when he headed home Charles Yohane’s corner to put the home team into the lead and net the club’s first goal in four matches.
Alois Bunjira almost made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute but his 30m bullet missed the target by centimetres.
After being reduced to 10 men, Arrows struggled under the pressure. Mhlongo scored his second goal of the night when he headed home Ivan Winstanley’s cross to give the students a 2-0 lead after 67 minutes.
Industrious midfielder Schalkwyk came close in the 64th and 69th minutes with long-range shots that just screamed over the Arrows crossbar as Wits mounted the pressure.
Neil Winstanley put the cherry on top of a fine win when he made it 3-0 from a Yohane free kick in the 82nd minute. — Sapa
