The two unions who threatened to down tools at the SABC have both accepted the public broadcaster’s wage offer.
The Media Workers’ Association of South Africa (Mwasa) said on Friday it had accepted the SABC’s 8,55% offer and had officially called off the strike.
This comes after the Broadcast, Electronic Media and Allied Workers’ Union (Bemawu) unconditionally accepted the offer on Thursday night.
The unions had previously jointly given 48 hours’ notice of their intention to strike, which would have come into effect at 4.30pm on Friday.
The wage negotiations between the unions and the SABC collapsed on Monday night and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) issued a certificate attesting to the failure of the parties to reach an agreement on wage adjustments.
The CCMA proposed an 8,8% increase across the board and an increase of R1200 per annum in the housing allowances for employees at the lower levels of the bargaining unit.
The corporation rejected the proposal, saying that it did not enable it to address anomalies in remuneration. ‒ Sapa
