Former Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging leader Eugene Terre’blanche was convicted on Wednesday of five counts of terrorism by the Potchefstroom Regional Court, a National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson said.
Makhosini Nkosi said Terre’blanche was convicted under the Internal Security Act.
He said this followed a plea bargain in terms of which he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Nkosi said the State agreed to a six-year jail term, wholly suspended on condition that he was not convicted of the same offence in the future.
Wednesday’s sentencing did not affect the jail sentence Terre’blanche was currently serving, he said. The charges for which he was convicted were investigated by the priority crimes litigation unit of the SA Police Service.
Terre’blanche did not apply for amnesty for these crimes at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Nkosi said. Terre’blanche faced charges that he gave orders for at least five bombings. The perpetrators of the bombings were now serving life-sentences for other crimes. These bombings took place prior to the 1994 general elections. – Sapa
