Highway Africa journalist scoops Panos award

I never knew of ICTs issues until I trained with the Highway Africa”, says a smiling Ansbert Ngurumo holding tightly onto his prize. The trophy was presented to him at a Global Knowledge (GKP)/Panos Special Awards Night ceremony at a parallel event to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

Ansbert wrote his story: An Information Society Without Involvement? in Kiswahili, in his weekly column Maswali Magumu (Hard Questions) published by Mwananchi Wiki Hii newspaper, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, analysing his country’s ICTs situation and people’s involvement in the process of building an Information Society.

Ansbert was a trainee journalist at the recent Highway Africa conference for online journalism held at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa.

A freelance journalist and co-ordinator of the News Analysis Centre in Dar es Salaam, he is a consulting editor of an Academia Star Kids magazine in Tanzania, and also works as correspondent for the Media24 of South Africa. — Hana
