60 migrants feared lost in sinking

Turkish rescue teams were searching yesterday for about 60 illegal immigrants missing in the Mediterranean after their boat sank.

The ship, carrying migrants from Jordan, Iraq and Afghanistan, left the Turkish Mediterranean resort of Marmaris late on Saturday and was heading to the Greek island of Rhodes when it sank, the local governor, Huseyin Aksoy, said.

Only one survivor has been found so far. Rescuers picked 13 life vests from the water and some debris.

An Iraqi migrant found floating on a piece of wood told police that the wooden boat suddenly started to fill with water and then sank. A woman and 10-year-old girl were among the passengers. – Guardian Unlimited Â
