Heavy storms hit parts of Indonesia’s Java and Bali islands, killing at least four people and severely damaging hundreds of houses, news report said on Thursday.
The severe storms triggered landslides when rivers in the crowded East and Central Java provinces overflowed their banks, damaging hundreds of homes and sweeping away a number of bridges, the reports said.
Three people were killed and another one was listed as missing in East Java when floodwaters swept through dozens of villages in several districts on Wednesday, Jakarta’s leading Kompas newspaper, an Indonesian daily, reported.
The floods also swept away at least 15 bridges in East Java, cutting off land communications to and from several districts in the province, the reports said.
On the island of Bali, 99km east of Jakarta, an 80-year-old woman was killed and three others injured after floods triggered by hours of heavy rains and strong winds swept through four districts, the state-run Antara news agency reported.
The storms in Bali also heavily damaged more than 500 houses and knocked down scores of trees in several locations, the reports said.
Indonesia’s rainy season lasts from November to April, a period of perpetual peril from floods and landslides.
