An off-duty policeman was shot and killed while he was visiting his family in Khayelitsha in Cape Town on Saturday, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

Inspector Elliot Sinyangana said Constable Siyabulela Leon Mcengwa (27) was killed when several shots were fired at him around 7.15pm. He was hit in the head and died at the scene.

The constable’s private 9mm pistol and a cellphone were stolen. The motive for the killing was not clear.

Western Cape provincial police commissioner Mzwandile Petros said: ”Attacks against the police cannot be tolerated any longer.

”We will not hesitate to organise all available resources and do whatever it takes to bring these criminals to book.”
