Shave your head for cancer

Over 60 000 South Africans may have their heads shaved or colour-sprayed in 24 hours in April — when the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) tries to raise funds for cancer awareness and research.

Cansa spokesperson Michael Fagan said on Friday the Cansa Shavathon would be the high point of a campaign intended to raise R8-million to fight the disease.

Fagan said cancer affected one in four South Africans, and of this percentage, about half were diagnosed too late for any form of curative option.

“Cansa has repositioned itself to focus on prevention and how healthier lifestyle choices can have significant impact on the occurrence of this disease,” Fagan said.

The 24 hour Cansa Shavathon will be held nationwide from 2pm on April 2. The existing record is held by Australia. A similar event last year raised AUS$8,5-million for the Leukaemia Foundation and shaved 55 000 heads.

“We decided to hold a shavathon because most cancer patients lose their hair during chemotherapy.

“By taking part in this event, the public can really show their empathy for cancer sufferers and celebrate a cancer survivor’s life.”

Fagan said this was an opportunity for groups to challenge one another in one nation building event. The event will take place at shopping centres around the country on April 3.

Once participants have paid the R50 donation, they can either have their heads shaved to a “number one” cut, or colour sprayed with a professional hair spray. – Sapa
